This is a coptic-stitch notebook that I made for an old woman who I met in a Buddhist Temple in Chinatown. Her name is 凤美, which means "beautiful phoenix." A lot of work went into the planning of this book, especially because Chinese culture has special meanings attached to certain colors. I nearly wrote her name in red thread, which would have meant I was wishing for her to die and haunt the earth as an evil spirit.
So, my first step in this process was to dye the binding thread gold. The package said "Aztec gold," so I bought it. It came out more orange-like. I don't even know, what the heck is "AZTEC gold"?!
I cut the covers out of art board, the pages are from a sketch book, and the inner covers are covered in thicker yellow paper. Her name was done using a single piece of green hemp cord, which I threaded in and out of holes that I measured out and punched into the cover with an awl. If you want to see another example of that, you can look at these two deviations:
So, yep, I'm giving this to her today! Took about 5 hours total.
Yay! Coptic stitch is only confusing the first time. xD It's pretty easy until you have to do the "kettle stitch," but in my opinion coptic looks very beautiful! You should definitely make more! And if you make more while I'm away, link me to them on my profile. xDD
How much would it be to commission you for one? I've got a Nintai tattoo that I'd love on the front of a lined hand made book for writing or conlanging.
Well, I would say $10 + shipping, but would be willing to go less for you. But first I need to find lined paper, which is extremely hard to come by for binding.
I buy those cheap little A5 notebooks designed for schoolwork, we call them "1B4"s, they're usually covered with card and bound with a couple of staples, you have to buy more than one for a book (I think I used like six or seven for the last lined book I made). They're like 99c to buy here at a cheapy shop.
Let me know, and I'll start saving up. I'd really love a nintai book.
Oh, interesting! I didn't think of using lined paper from books. We don't have 1B4's here (never heard of it xD), but I can take a look around. I'd be more than happy to make you one.
And I'm glad you didn't wish her to die and haunt the earth... |D

Usually for school. As you can see, cheap as chips.
I'll start saving. :3
